All Whites Dominate Vanuatu to Top FIFA World Cup 2026

Whites delivered a commanding performance, thrashing Vanuatu 8-1 in their first full international match in Kirikiriroa Hamilton. The victory at FMG Stadium Waikato sees New Zealand surge to the top of Group B in FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying, securing a spot in the March semi-finals in Wellington.

A Perfect Start in Hamilton

Head coach Darren Bazeley fielded a strong lineup, featuring local heroes Logan Rogerson and Premier League star Chris Wood. A crowd of 10,113 witnessed an electrifying start as New Zealand took control within the first 10 minutes.

Midfielder Matt Garbett opened the scoring with a stunning strike after intercepting a Vanuatu pass on the edge of the box, extending his scoring streak to three consecutive home internationals.

Vanuatu’s Brief Spark

Despite the early setback, Vanuatu equalized six minutes later through Jordy Tasip, whose speculative cross-shot found its way past All Whites goalkeeper Max Crocombe. The equalizer brought celebrations on the Vanuatu bench, but their joy was short-lived.

Chris Wood Leads the Charge

New Zealand quickly regained the lead, with captain Chris Wood heading home a precise Libby Cacace corner. Moments later, Wood struck again, converting a cross from the in-form Garbett for his 38th international goal.

By the 32nd minute, Garbett’s influence continued as his long-range shot set up Tyler Bindon for his maiden All Whites goal. An own goal from Vanuatu minutes later capped an explosive first half, leaving the All Whites with a 5-1 lead at halftime.

Bazeley introduced Joe Bell and Sarpreet Singh in the second half, both making an immediate impact. Eli Just added the sixth with a dazzling solo run, while Singh scored his second international goal, finishing off a well-executed team move involving Garbett and Cacace.

Singh then turned provider, delivering a pinpoint cross for Callum McCowatt to seal the 8-1 victory—the All Whites’ largest win in over two decades.

The Road Ahead

New Zealand will look to maintain their winning momentum as they face Samoa at Go Media Stadium on Monday. A victory would secure a perfect international window with three wins from three matches.
